So, they decided to integrate the use of a contactless keycard into their vehicles and create an system that would allow drivers to unlock and start their vehicles with just a wave of hands. The key card is now found in two of three Renault vehicles. If it's located in the ignition barrel, or the centre console, the car will unlock when the card is near and close automatically when it's removed. The first hands-free card was introduced in 2001, in the Laguna II saloon. This car was designed to be the lifestyle car of the 21st Century. Bernard Dumondel was the product leader for Laguna II at the time. He used his hotel room keys to unlock his car. He believed that keys for cars could be created with the same magnetic strip used for the key.
In the years that followed, the card was praised as a revolutionary innovation and is now available on two out of every three Renault vehicles. Although smartphones are nearing the point of replacing it, Renault has chosen to harness these new capabilities without having the hands-free card go out of use.
The keyless entry system
The hands-free card from Renault was a revolutionary piece of technology when it was first introduced 20 years ago. The exterior of the card is identical, but the technology has been upgraded to make it more user-friendly and harder to hack.
First of all, it cannot be used to unlock the doors or start the engine from outside the vehicle unless it is activated by the driver. The reason for this is that radio signal antennae "around" the car are configured to detect the presence of the key outside or inside it. The key will still start the ignition from a distance, but will not open the doors. This is for your safety.
Second, the wireless remote control transmissions used by the system use the rolling-code. This minimizes the possibility of someone stealing the control message and then retransmitting it to gain access, but does not eliminate it. [1]
